Get started with regex

24.08.2015

A regular expression (abbreviated regex or regexp and sometimes called a rational expression) is a special text string for describing a search pattern.

Programming languages like JavaScript, Perl, Ruby provide built in regular expression capabilities. Most languages, for example .NET, Java, C++ provide regex via a standard library. In a regular expression each character is understood with its special meaning, or a regular character with its literal meaning. Together, they can be used to identify textual material of a given pattern, or process a number of instances of it that can vary from a precise equality to a very general similarity of the pattern.

Here are some of the special characters in regular expressions, their meanings, and several examples that can help you to understand regex better.
